The Ohs and Ahs of Torah Reading
Published in Paperback by YODAN Publishing (01 October, 1999)
Author: Rivka Sherman-Gold
Average review score:

A definite must for Torah readers!
My Cantor recommended this book to me and I absolutely love it! The layout of the book makes it user-friendly to check a Torah portion. The colored pages are also helpful as they draw immediate attention to the kametz katon in question. This book is well worth the $$!

An ISRAELI's "BAAL TEFILA" Review
As a "BAAL TEFILA" (Prayer leader) and "BAAL KREIA" (Torah reader) in ISRAEL and as an ISRAELI who is familiar with the Hebrew language, I found this book to be very helpful, informative and accurate. The history of "Kamatz Katan" was quite new for me. I use the book on a regular basis, while preparing for Torah reading and for the prayers. The starcture of the book that addresses all the Parashot and Haftarot makes it very easy to be aware of the "Kamatz Katan" and improves the accuracy of Hebrew pronunciation in Torah reading and in praying. Rivka Sherman-Gold deserves a great "ISHAR KOACH" for the exceelent work!

A most excellent present!
This Hanukah, two of my best Torah students and dearest friends gave me "Ohs and Ahs of Torah Reading" and it's one of my favorite presents of all time. I have been the Torah Reader at Congregation Ner Tamid in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, for the past thirteen years, and I've known about the "closed, unaccented syllable" rule for the kamatz-katan vowel from my days in Hebrew class at the University of Judaism, but to have all of them, from the whole Torah, listed in order, page after page, in color! This book is a remarkably user-friendly guide; a true advancement in the art of Torah Reading. No one who teaches or reads Torah should be without it. On behalf of all Torah Readers, Rivka Sherman-Gold should be commended for her work.

Stone Crusade: A Historical Guide to Bouldering in America (The American Alpine Book Series)
Published in Hardcover by Amer Alpine Club (September, 1994)
Author: John Sherman
Average review score:

Good book, bad binding
This book is fantastic. If you like bouldering and John Sherman's humorous tales you will enjoy this book.

The SOFT COVER BINDING FALLS APART after one or two openings. Of three people I know with the soft cover, all three have fallen apart. BUY THE HARD COVER VERSION!

Excellent.
It reads as a guidebook, a history, and as literature. Sherman writes with surprising grace and introspection about the sport. Nice profiles of the locals at different areas, too. And I was relieved to see no reference to the finest, and apparently still secret, problem at Carderock, MD.

This book is a must have classic for any climber.
Stone Crusade is THE book of bouldering and the history of the sport in the USA. John Sherman's witty and irreverent writing style and his artistic photographic skill capture the true feeling of the sport across the entire country. A guide book, history lesson, and entertainment all rolled into one. You will want to hit the road on your own Stone Crusade.

A fun and enjoyable read
Ken Hoffman really has a way of putting a smile on my face. This collection of stories is easy to read and hard to put down. I have just lent it to my mother and know she will enjoy it, too.

An Easy Read - I couldn't put it down
This is the only time I have received a book as a gift that I actually liked. Someone gave me a copy at work. I LOVE IT. Now I am going to give it to my sister to read.

A humorous and thoughtful collection.
Ken Hoffman has a unique way of looking at the world. His ability to find the interesting aspects of everyday life make for a thoroughly enjoyable read. I would recommend this to my friends.

Your Work Matters to God
Published in Paperback by Navpress (December, 1987)
Authors: Doug Sherman and William Hendricks
Average review score:

Life changing
Looking for this book on Amazon, because once again my loaned out copy somewhere got lost in the shuffle. Not the first time this happened to me, for this book. That's ok - it's helping get the word out!

This book is amazing, it changed my whole perspective on work, forever. I read it over 5 years ago, and am still impressed at how well the authors articulated God's purpose for work in our lives. Indeed, it's a form of worship. Should be required reading for every Christian, really.

Integrates Two Worlds -- Church & Work
Finding the teaching of Martin Luther on the Christian call and vocation, Sherman investigates and prepares a seminary dissertation on this topic.

Well done expose on Romans 12:1-2, how Christians do not see their calls as whatever work God gives them to do, that there they are His ambassadors, to carry His light and let it shine through them in whatever endeavors God equips them to do.

Work was there for humans even before the fall into sin, and thus this book does a great service to the church when it encourages it to take this significant area of our lives and let it still be part of our God given stewardship.

I used this successfully as a Bible study. Sherman and his company at that time had great additional materials, including a video, etc.

To go more into the background of all this, see Gustav Wingren's "On Vocation."

God is interested in every aspect of your life
Many Christians think that God is only interested in the `spiritual' things like going to church, evangelism. For many years, I suspect such views lack something but couldn't prove why. Is it possible that the God who creates my physical body and brains be so unconcern that I need to eat to live and that work is needed to produce food? Isn't Adam commanded to work in the garden? If work is really irrelevant to God, why are we spending half of our waking lives at work?

This book has addressed many of the burning questions. Yes, God is interested in every aspect of your life - your body, family & work! You can integrate religion with work and business! God has something to say about why he wants you to work, what kind of job to do and how to handle the unpleasant aspects of work, anything you name it.

If you seriously want to glorify God every minute of your life, you should not hesitate to spend a few hours reading this book that can change your eternity! Books like this is rare!

1776: A Musical Play
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (November, 1976)
Authors: Peter Stone, Edwards Sherman, Peter Stones, and Sherman Edwards
Average review score:

1776 -- One of the Best Plays of All Time
Peter Stone's play "1776", is not only a wonderfully entertaining piece of musical theatre, containing great songs and dialogue (often with a healthy amount of wit), it is also historically accurate. The story centers around the Second Continental Congress in Philidelphia (most notably John Adams), in the months immediately prior to the signing of The Declaration of Independence. One of the things that impressed me most about this play was that when writing dialogue between Congress members, letters from Gen. Washington, and conversations between Adams and his wife, Stone reviewed historical documents. Thus, many exchanges you hear/read throughout the play were actual conversations or letters written by those people. Therefore, the play is not only entertaining, it's educational. This play allows you to better understand the people who fought so hard to secure American independence. So often we revere our forefathers with such a sense of awe that we forget their basic humanity. Stone does a wonderful job of reminding us all that these were simple men and women, with everyday hopes and dreams, who were also willing to risk their lives for the freedom that they sought. I think that this play ought to be performed for every school in America -- it teaches while it entertains!

Patriotic Excellence
1776 is a very special play. It portrays true historical magic. I especially liked the play because of the character development. I liked how Peter Stone, the author, developed John Adams character. Stone portrayed Adams as an egotistical jerk who would not take no for an answer. The ironic thing was that his unwillingness to quit was the key to winning our independence.

I am especially involved in the study of history. The play was actually quite accurate except for all the singing and dancing which was added for theatrical purposes. The play had great lyrics and music. Not only was the book version well done the movie was also excellent. The movie stayed word for word with the book.

This play attracted my attention to a specific theme. When John Adams was desperate and discouraged he did not give up. He kept on pushing and pushing untill he had the outcome he wanted. A major theme of this novel would have to be to not give up when faced with tremendous odds. If John Adams had given up then we would most likely still be under British rule.

This play should definitly be read by all u.s. history classes. It inspires patriotism just at the mention of the title. This play is a great source and accurate account of exactly how this great nation became so great. A truly outstanding book.

Engrossing and Very Historically Accurate
This musical play really inspires patriotic feelings for any American that reads it. A sense of the magnanimity of such an occasion can be felt by its readers. From John Adams's beligerant character to Ben Franklin's sensibility, the reader will feel like he has known these great men and women forever.

Another Day In Paradise A Fourth Sherman'S Lagoon
Published in Paperback by Andrews McMeel Publishing (October, 2001)
Author: Jim Toomey
Average review score:

Visit your local aquarium after you read this book!
It'll never look the same again. We visited the Texas State Aquarium, in Corpus Christi- which happens to have a special exhibit of Jim Toomey's cartoons, with original drawings, used to raise awareness of marine conservation in kids. Fun for adults, too!

Who couldn't want marine conservation after becoming familiar with the inhabitants of Kapupu Lagoon? Sherman is a shark with, let's say, not too much in the way of brains; his mate, Megan, is much smarter - but has her weaknesses. Hawthorne is an irritable and irritating hermit crab, who wears a beer can rather than a shell. Hawthorne has a rather elaborate crab hole- Persian carpets, golf putting range - and is always dreaming up schemes to make more money. Fillmore is an endangered turtle, who can't find a mate, possibly because of the extremely bad poetry he writes. Other characters we see regularly include a polar bear who visits the Lagoon every year instead of hibernating; a computer-savvy fish who swims around with a laptop and hacks into important systems; a giant squid who always keeps his appointments; an orca formerly in a sea-entertainment complex, who can't quite cope with life in the wild; and the occasional herd of vegetarian piranha. There's also a couple of human characters once in a while- a fishing boat captain trying to catch Sherman and/or his friends, to use on the menu at his seafood restaurant; the people who run glass-bottom boat tours; and of course the hairless beach apes whom Sherman tries to lure into the water for lunch.

Every strip is funny; the messages about marine conservation, about cable lines under the ocean and other human incursions affecting sea life sneak in at you without detracting from the humor at all.

Entering the 4th Dimension
This book is again a phantastic collection of funny
and often very curious fish cartoon stories. Even the 4th
book is as good as the first one. The author projects
ordinary (and not so ordinary ;-)) everyday situations on
a couple of fishs around sherman the shark living in a
little lagoon at Kapupu Island. It is one of the best
cartoons and I think the best fish cartoon available.
For fans it's a wonderful reunion with Sherman, Megan,
Fillmore, Capt. Quigly, and all the others.

Have Fun!

Karl

Return of the funniest eating machine in the lagoon!
Sherman's back. Still eating most everything in sight. Still failing Megan in the romance department. Still losing his fights with the giant squid. And still hilariously goofy in the process. Weird, wonderful, and hard to describe, I suggest you check out some of the strips online (you'll have to search for them, Amazon won't let me include the URL) and, if you laugh hard, buy this book. If you laugh a little read a few more until you do laugh hard, then buy this book. If you have no idea why anyone would laugh at this stuff, better stick to Family Circus!

Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman, Joe Johnston, and the Yankee Heavy Battalions (American Crisis Series, No. 3)
Published in Hardcover by Scholarly Resources (January, 2002)
Author: Stephen Davis
Average review score:

Atlanta Will Fall
Stephen Davis has written a lucid account of the dark days of the Army of Tennessee as it was outmaneuvered and outgeneraled by W.T. Sherman during the campaign for Atlanta in 1864. Davis has introduced new primary research to support his assertions that Atlanta was lost in December 1863 when Johnston was appointed commander of the Army of Tennessee. History has castigated John Bell Hood for the loss and Davis does everything he can to dispel this claim and more. Very well written and full of the authors conclusions, it makes the reader think about what he is reading. Highly recommended for anyone who knows anything at all about the Georgia campaign. The passages on Johnston, Hardee, and Hood are especially interesting.

Davis' work is superb
Stephen Davis systematically tackles the old myths surrounding the Atlanta campaign and its subsequent capture by the North. His analysis of Johnston's tactical decisions clearly elucidates where responsibility for Atlanta's loss truly lay. It is obvious that Davis has spent a great deal of time researching this work and his efforts show. A must read for anyone who enjoys a gripping, thoroughly researched account of a major historical event.

Was it Johnston who lost Atlanta due to overcaution?
Atlanta Will Fall: Sherman, Joe Johnston, and the Yankee Heavy Bandits is a sharp overview of the entire Atlanta campaign during the American Civil War, from Dalton to Jonesboro. The battles are described and the strategies analyzed, with detailed evaluations of the three major generals involved. In particular, author Davis argues that between the Confederate leaders Joe Johnston and John Bell Hood, it was Johnston who lost Atlanta due to overcaution, while Hood got the bad rap. Atlanta Will Fall is strongly recommended reading for Civil War buffs.

The Ballad of Pinewood Lake
Published in Hardcover by Forge (February, 2001)
Author: Jory Sherman
Average review score:

The Ballad of Pinewood
The Author is able to capture your full attention and is able to make a book into a real life story as with Johnny and Angela. Written with the heart. A story that will bring out all your feelings and even a heartbreaker. I look forward to his next ballad.

Pleased by this selection
Ballad of Pinewood Lake is a novel that doesn't fit easily into a genre, but I'm going to call it a love story with a style of its own. It is a well written story that gave me a glimpse into a very different world than the one where I live, never-the-less there are parallels to be found in the sturggles of Johnny and Angela, and they are parallels that run alongside all of our lives pushing us to explore the multiplicity surrounding us.

Astory as touching as it is tragic ...
They dreamed of a different life. A life not supported by concrete pillars, decorated by crowds of people, and the sounds of automobile motors and smell of exhaust. Pinewood Lake seemed to have the answers, where writer Johnny Paul could find peace in his work, and where together with his alcoholic wife, Angela, and their toddler son, Colin, they could start anew. THE BALLAD OF PINEWOOD LAKE is a story of a family and how they confront a personal crisis, and also, quite possibly, how they hide from it. Seemingly content with their new surroundings of the lake, with the harmony of tall pines and wildlife, they intertwine with the people of Pinewood Lake, who unexpectedly go against the grain of the Paul's desired change. They too, like the Pauls, have come to a place to bury their past, with the assistance of alcohol, only to find that their problems are still very much alive and indiscreet as ever. But in Pinewood Lake they remain, to follow the seasons and brave the social life, dreaming, and trying not to lose it all in the dark pits of their worst fears. Jory Sherman, notable for a vivid and stylistic prose, comparable only to classics such as Joyce, Fitzgerald or Hemmingway, triumphs again with a story as touching as it is tragic. Undoubtedly a book for all times, and quite possibly Sherman's best work yet.

Sherman's 21 Laws of Speaking: How to Inspire Others to Action

Author: Rob Sherman
Average review score:

patrickj6769@excite.com
Many articles and books have been written about speaking. Rob Sherman has created his 1aws by integrating some of the best practices in those articles with his own personal experiences and wisdom. Mr. Sherman is motivatiating and enthusiastically encourages the novice to improve and the seasoned vetern to refine. He postulates that successful executives need to include public speaking into their management tool-kit. Mr. Sherman blends content development, emotional readiness and tips for delivery. The book is well referenced for those who would wish to pursue his 21 Laws in more depth.

The book can be read quickly. The cross-referencing is well done and some may find that to be the best feature. A reader could find value in the entire collection ideas, or select ones which may fit their individual situation.

Book Review
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I consider it a must for anyone who ever has to speak before a group no matter what size.

What every CEO needs to deliver powerful presentations
This book is a powerhouse of practical recommendations that are strategically driven. In addition to helping to create great presentations, Rob also addresses how to prepare your audience before the actual engagement. It was very evident after reading this book that his insights are based on real life experiences and success stories, not on armchair academia. As a CEO, it is clear to me that professional speaking opportunities are an effective way to position your organization as innovative, forward thinking and as a viable resource. Immediately after applying Rob's ideas, our company experienced an increase in business. Recently after presenting at the annual board of directors meeting to a group of 100 people, I was told that, because of my presentation, our firm was chosen. The ideas in this book are easy to apply and they work. Five stars ....a must read for every CEO serious about growing their business.
